Few troopships from the Spanish-American War are as well known as the one pictured here, the steamer Yucatan carrying Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders toward Cuba. The 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, recruited in 1898 and led by Roosevelt and Leonard Wood, drew cowboys, ranchers, lawmen, and Eastern college men, and it sailed from Tampa that June, leaving most of its horses behind. The stereo card was issued by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York publisher whose views reached a public eager for war news, though the record's caption data is old and not fully verified.
