Rather than a single landmark, this view takes in the grounds of the World's Columbian Exposition, the 1893 fair held in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side. The fair marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and its planners, led by architect Daniel Burnham and landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted, laid out a lakeside campus of large classical halls coated in a plaster-based material that gave the complex its nickname, the White City. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and Johnston was one of many photographers who recorded the fair's buildings and grounds.
