The Statue of the Republic, a gilded figure roughly 65 feet tall, rose at the western end of the Grand Basin in the Court of Honor, where its reflection shimmered in the water. Daniel Chester French designed the work, which was built of temporary staff for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, the fair that marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. Its placement, facing the Administration Building across the basin, made it one of the most photographed features of the White City. Like most of the fair's buildings and sculpture, it was never meant to last, and it was lost after the exposition closed.
