Few structures at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition were as vast as the Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building, which sprawled across Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side. Architect George B. Post designed it in the Beaux-Arts style, and its scale was meant to show off the industrial output and inventions of the era under one roof. The fair, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, drew millions of visitors and helped make the White City's classical look a model for American public architecture.
