The Transportation Building stands at the edge of the lagoon in this view, with a gondola drifting in the foreground, a detail that marks it as a scene from the Court of Honor's watery edges rather than the grand exhibit halls. The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, drew millions of visitors to its white neoclassical buildings and man-made canals. Louis Sullivan's Transportation Building, with its famous Golden Door entrance, was one of the more ornate structures among them. The gondolas, rowed by Venetian-style gondoliers, were a popular way to glide past the fair's monumental architecture.
