Carpets and rugs are piled and hung inside a booth in the Turkish bazaar at the World's Columbian Exposition, the Chicago fair of 1893 that marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. The bazaar was one of the reconstructed foreign quarters along the Midway Plaisance, where visitors could browse stalls rather than only view exhibits behind glass. The photograph was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which helped views like this one reach people who never made the trip. Its focus on merchandise shows how the Midway mixed commerce with spectacle.
