Canals and lagoons shaped the layout of the World's Columbian Exposition, and this view records one of the waterways winding past the fair's exhibition buildings in Jackson Park. The 1893 fair, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, opened that May and drew millions of visitors to its planned "White City" of neoclassical halls, designed under Daniel Burnham and with landscape by Frederick Law Olmsted. The photograph comes from the collection of Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the exposition and whose work is now held by the Library of Congress.
