Built as an answer to the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Exposition of 1889, the Ferris wheel was the marquee attraction of the World's Columbian Exposition, which drew millions of visitors to Chicago in 1893. Engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. designed the steel wheel, which stood about 264 feet tall and carried riders in enclosed cars on the Midway Plaisance, the fair's entertainment strip. Because the caption card for this photograph is unverified, its exact view and date are best treated as approximate, but the image still captures the wheel's novelty as a new kind of urban spectacle.
