The interior of an exhibit hall at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition is the subject here, a view that shows how crowded and monumental the fairground's exhibition buildings were. The Exposition, held in Chicago to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, drew tens of millions of visitors and set the tone for the City Beautiful movement, with its white neoclassical buildings and carefully planned grounds. This print was made by the Allgeier Co. of Chicago, a commercial photography firm, and its copyright notice suggests it was sold as a souvenir view of the fair.
