A carved ivory saddle, billed in the title as an elephant ivory saddle, was one of the curiosities shown at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The fair, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, drew millions of visitors to its white neoclassical buildings along the lakefront. Exhibitors sent everything from machinery to ornate decorative objects, and photographers such as the Souvenir Photographic Co. sold cabinet cards like this one so visitors could take home a record of what they had seen. The card preserves a display object that would otherwise survive only in memory.
