From across the water, the Woman's Building rises among the white neoclassical palaces of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park, Chicago. Architect Sophia Hayden, then in her early twenties, designed the building, which housed exhibits on women's work, education, and art, including a mural by Mary Cassatt. Its presence at the fair gave women a showcase within a celebration of American progress that was otherwise largely run by men. The caption card is brief, so the photographer and exact date of the view are not confirmed.
