The library shown here stood inside the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a hall devoted to the work and achievements of women. The building was designed by Sophia Hayden, a young architect who had recently become one of the first women to earn an architecture degree from MIT, and its library held books by women authors. The photograph is credited to C.D. Arnold, but its catalog information comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so the exact date and arrangement of the room are best treated as approximate.
