Few structures at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition drew more attention than the giant wheel built on the fairgrounds in Chicago. Engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. designed it as an American answer to the Eiffel Tower, and it rose about 264 feet, with passenger cars that carried riders high above the Midway. The record attributes the photograph to Weber, though that attribution comes from an unverified caption card. The image captures the scale that made the wheel a symbol of the fair's ambitions and of the era's enthusiasm for engineering.
