Few attractions at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition drew as much notice as the great Ferris wheel, which this stereograph labels as 280 feet high. Engineer George W. G. Ferris designed it as an American answer to the Eiffel Tower, and its enclosed cars lifted riders above the Midway Plaisance, offering sweeping views of the fairgrounds. Stereo cards like this one, copyrighted by B.L. Singley, were sold to be viewed through a hand viewer that fused two slightly offset photographs into a single image with depth.
