The dome of the Manufactures Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition carried allegorical murals, and this view focuses on the panels devoted to ceramics, metalwork and textiles, painted by an artist identified only as Cox. The fair in Jackson Park marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas and displayed the era's industrial output in a classical setting that became known as the White City. Most of its buildings were temporary and were torn down after the exhibition closed, so photographs like this one are among the main surviving records of their decoration.
