Weimer Pursell's poster for the Century of Progress fair puts its theme in the date line itself, "1833-1933," counting the century from the year Chicago was incorporated as a town. The exposition opened on the lakefront in 1933 and ran into 1934, presenting itself as a showcase of how far science, industry and design had come. Silkscreen suited the poster's flat fields of bold color, which match the streamlined look many people associated with the era. Large numbers of visitors reached the fairgrounds by rail, which is why the poster sits comfortably among railroad material.
