Two ballplayers in different uniforms stand full-length for this April 1915 portrait: Hans Lobert of the New York Giants on the left and Joe Schultz, Sr. of the Brooklyn Dodgers on the right. The picture was taken in the first weeks of the season, when clubs were still sorting out rosters and teams were posing players for newspapers. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that Bain distributed to papers in the early 1900s, so the pictures were made to be reproduced quickly, not as studio art. Seeing an upstate New York rival, a National League foe, standing side by side is a reminder of how close the two New York-area clubs were in that era.
