Casey Stengel stands full length, facing left, wearing sunglasses, as he played the outfield for the Brooklyn Dodgers around 1915. Stengel spent several seasons with Brooklyn in the 1910s, and the sunglasses give this view a more casual air than many posed baseball portraits of the period. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs taken in New York in the early twentieth century. Stengel later became one of the best-known figures in the game, managing the New York Yankees to multiple championships, but here he is still early in his career.
