William J. Klem, shown here standing full length and turned to the left, was one of the best-known umpires of the early twentieth century, and he worked National League games for decades. Bain's studio portraits of sports figures from the 1910s were often taken for newspaper use, so this image likely served editors covering the game. Klem earned the nickname "The Old Arbitrator" for his firm, authoritative style behind the plate, and a portrait like this captures the formal presence that made him a fixture of the era.
