Babe Ruth stands full-length in his baseball uniform, turned slightly to the left and gripping a bat, with his own signature written across the image: "Yours truly 'Babe' Ruth." That signed inscription, marked "No. 6," points to the photograph's purpose as a promotional piece sold to fans around 1920, when Ruth was in his first seasons with the New York Yankees after leaving Boston. The studio Irwin, La Broad & Pudlin, a Chicago-area firm, produced many such player cards and portraits in this period, and the image was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a sign of how valuable a star's likeness had become.
