Outfielder Delos Drake, who lived from 1886 to 1965, stands full length, facing left and holding a bat, in the uniform of St. Louis's Federal League club. The Federal League challenged the established National and American Leagues in 1914 and 1915, and portraits like this one show how its players were presented to the public. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its 1914 date rests on 2006 research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee.
