Frank Leon Allen, who lived from 1888 to 1933, stands full length and faces right with both hands raised above his head, a pose that breaks from the stiff studio stance common in early baseball portraits. He wears the uniform of the Brooklyn Feds, the nickname of a club in the Federal League, a rival major league that played in 1914 and 1915. The record dates this print to 1912, a date the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee researched in 2006, so the uniform is worth comparing with the league's known history. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of a New York news photographer whose images document the city's sports and public life in the early twentieth century.
