Herman Malloy stands in full uniform, facing the camera, in this 1908 portrait of a Detroit Tigers player. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, produced many images like it, capturing ballplayers for newspapers that were eager for pictures of the sport's stars and rising players. The Tigers were then one of the strongest teams in the American League, built around Ty Cobb, so a portrait of a lesser-known pitcher like Malloy offers a view of the team's broader roster. Full-length studio-style images of this kind were less common than head-and-shoulders shots, which makes the pose and complete uniform worth a closer look.
