Walter Allen Blair is shown in full-length uniform, facing right and mid-throw, a pose that captures the quick arm action catchers needed to cut down base runners. The New York American League club he played for was then known as the Highlanders, a name it used until the team became the Yankees in 1913. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken in New York in the early twentieth century. Its 1909 date was assigned by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006, which shows how much photo archives rely on later research to date and identify their images.
