Ed Summers, whose full name was Oren Edgar Summers, stands in his Detroit Tigers uniform in this full-length portrait taken around 1909. The picture is a Bain News Service print from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that the agency distributed to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Summers pitched for Detroit in the years before the club's great teams of that decade, and the studio-style pose, with the player turned toward the right, reflects how press photographers often presented ballplayers as individual figures. The date rests on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than on a written caption from the period.
