Ralph Works, a member of the Detroit Tigers, sits for a head-and-shoulders portrait in his uniform, facing the camera directly, in this print dated August 23, 1909. Detroit was contending for the American League pennant that summer and went on to win it, though the team lost the World Series to Pittsburgh that fall. The picture is one of many made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs, and its plain studio-style framing reflects how baseball players were documented for the press in the early 1900s.
