A head-and-shoulders portrait of Jay Kirke, who was born Judson Fabian Kirke in 1888, shows the ballplayer facing the camera in his team uniform. The Library of Congress catalogs it as part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made in New York in the early twentieth century, when newspapers relied on studio-quality pictures of sports figures for their sports pages. The 1911 date comes from research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee, which dated the image in 2006. Frontal portraits like this one were a standard format for baseball players of the period, and they preserve how the players presented themselves to a public that followed the game closely.
