Few players of the 1910s left a bigger mark on the Philadelphia Athletics than John Franklin Baker, the third baseman whose "Home Run" nickname came from his power at the plate. In this 1914 portrait he faces the camera squarely in uniform, a plain, formal study of a player who had already led the American League in home runs and helped the A's win three World Series. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for the Bain News Service in New York, and its date rests on later research by baseball historians.
