Few players of the 1910s are as closely tied to the dead-ball era as John Franklin "Home Run" Baker, shown here mid-swing in a Philadelphia Athletics uniform. Baker led the American League in home runs four straight seasons, from 1911 through 1914, a feat that looked remarkable when most hitters rarely cleared the fences at all. The Athletics won the World Series in 1910, 1911, and 1913 with Baker at third base. This Bain News Service photograph is one of many newspaper-wire pictures from the period, and its date of 1914 comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
