Frank Chance stands at home plate with his bat cocked and ready to swing, while catcher Pat Moran waits to the left to receive the pitch. Chance, the Chicago National League first baseman who also managed the club, was a central figure on the Cubs teams that won pennants in the middle of the decade. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection of early news photographs, so it shows a working moment of the game rather than a posed portrait. The 1909 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
