Frank Gilhooley is caught mid-swing at home plate in this 1913 print, a moment that captures the batter's full weight and follow-through rather than a posed stance. He played for the New York Yankees in the years when the club was still known as the Highlanders, before the name change in 1913, and the photograph belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographers documented ballplayers, boxers and street life in New York during the 1910s. Images like this one are valuable for showing the bat, stance and equipment of the period, when baseball gloves were small and uniforms were heavy flannel.
