Few players of the era carried a nickname as memorable as "Turkey" Mike Donlin, the outfielder who helped the New York Giants during the first decade of the 1900s. This print, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1915 or 1916, probably shows him after his playing days had largely ended. By then Donlin had moved into vaudeville and silent films, a path many well-known athletes took as the stage and screen grew more popular. The picture is a useful reminder of how closely baseball and popular entertainment were tied in the early twentieth century.
