Wally Pipp is caught mid-slide at third base in this April 21, 1924 game between New York and Washington, a play that freezes the moment before the tag. Pipp was the Yankees' first baseman through the mid-1920s, playing alongside Babe Ruth in a lineup that was becoming one of the strongest in the league. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that supplied sports and news pictures to newspapers in this period, made many images like this one, and its work is now held by the Library of Congress. Pipp is remembered today partly because he was replaced at first base by Lou Gehrig in 1925.
