Griffith Stadium, the home park of the Washington Senators on Georgia Avenue in Northwest Washington, is the setting for this view of a ball game with spectators in the stands and a single player on the field. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington life in the early twentieth century, produced the image sometime between 1909 and 1932, a span that covers the ballpark's early years and the era when the Senators featured Walter Johnson on the mound. Crowds at the park were a fixture of the capital's social life, and the picture captures a moment that reflects how baseball had become a shared civic pastime by the 1920s.
