Griffith Stadium, the home of the Washington Senators, stood at Seventh Street and Florida Avenue in Northwest Washington, and this print captures a game played there in the years between 1909 and 1932. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital from the early 1900s through the 1930s, produced thousands of such views of streets, monuments and sporting events. Griffith Stadium was an intimate ballpark for its time, and it hosted the Senators, Negro League teams such as the Homestead Grays, and college football, so the photograph offers a glimpse of a venue that shaped the city's sporting life for decades.
