Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo's Bunkyo ward was among the first baseball grounds built in Japan to resemble the purpose-built American ballparks of the day, and it became the home of the Yomiuri Giants, the country's most storied professional club. This 1963 halftone, one of a numbered series of Tokyo subjects from the 1960s, shows the stadium at a time when baseball drew large crowds and the ballpark stood at the center of city life. The Giants played at Korakuen until 1987, when the team moved to the Tokyo Dome. Viewed today, the print captures a postwar Tokyo in which the ballpark was both a sporting venue and a gathering place.
