The 1921 World Series was the first to be played in a best-of-nine format, and this picture captures the sheer size of the crowds that packed the stands for it. Fans filled the seats well before first pitch, a sign of how quickly professional baseball had become the country's most popular spectator sport after the First World War. The series pitted the New York Giants against the New York Yankees, the first Fall Classic between two teams from the same city, and it drew enormous interest in both boroughs and beyond. Look closely at the crowd and you can see the mix of hats, suits and shirtsleeves typical of a ballpark in that era.
