Spectators fill the stands in this 1910 view of the opening game of an unofficial World Series between two New York teams, the Nationals and the Americans. In 1910 New York had two major league clubs in rival leagues, so a series between them drew strong local interest and large crowds. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for newspapers in the 1900s and 1910s, when baseball had become a mass public spectacle. The fans' clothing and hats offer a useful glimpse of urban crowds of the period.
