Mickey Mantle is caught mid-stride as he runs the bases during the 1956 World Series, a frame from a contact sheet rather than a finished print, which gives it the loose, unposed feel of a working photographer's negative. Marvin E. Newman shot the picture for Look magazine, and the record notes it entered the magazine's library on October 15, 1956. The Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers met that fall in one of the most closely watched Series of the decade, and Mantle, then in his mid-twenties and already the team's marquee power hitter, was central to New York's hopes. Newman's sequence captures the speed and effort that defined Mantle on the basepaths.
