Few images capture a batter's swing from behind the way this contact-sheet frame does, with Mickey Mantle's back to the camera and the bat raised high overhead. Marvin E. Newman, a staff photographer for Look magazine, made the picture, and the record notes it was added to the magazine's library on May 15, 1956. Mantle was in his mid-twenties and at the height of his career with the New York Yankees, then the dominant club in the American League. Look's photographers often sought action shots that showed a player's build and motion rather than a posed face, which makes this view unusually revealing of the swing itself.
