Shot from behind the batter, this photograph of Mickey Mantle at the plate focuses on his stance and posture rather than his face, a vantage that lets viewers study how he set up for a pitch. Marvin E. Newman made the picture for Look magazine, and the library date of May 15, 1956, places it during the season Mantle won the American League Triple Crown. He played his entire career with the New York Yankees, from 1951 to 1968, and images like this one capture the era when the club was a dominant force in the league.
