Mickey Mantle sits in a clubhouse in full Yankee uniform, bat resting across his knees, in this frame from a 1956 session by Marvin E. Newman. The image survives as a contact sheet frame, the small-format proof a photographer would study before choosing which negatives to print large. Newman worked widely for Look magazine, and the picture reflects that magazine-style approach: a relaxed, unposed moment that puts a star player in an ordinary setting. Mantle was in the middle of a strong run for the Yankees in 1956, and the photograph offers a quiet look at the player away from the field.
