Mickey Mantle is shown in a clubhouse, bent over and wrapping his leg before a game, a small, unposed moment of pregame routine. The picture is a contact sheet frame by Marvin E. Newman, who photographed for Look magazine, and the record dates it to May 15, 1956, when the Yankees were in the middle of a season that would end with another American League pennant. Mantle was the team's center fielder and by then one of the best-known players in the game, so frames like this, showing the work behind the stardom, were the kind of behind-the-scenes material magazines used to build a player's public image.
