Few pictures of Mickey Mantle show him from behind, and this one, a contact-sheet frame by Marvin E. Newman, catches the Yankee slugger in a rear view with his bat resting over his shoulder, ready for the next pitch. Newman worked for Look magazine, and the Library of Congress notes that the frame was added to the magazine's library on May 15, 1956, at the height of Mantle's reputation as the league's most feared hitter. The contact sheet itself is worth noticing: it preserves the unedited sequence a photographer shot and chose from, offering a glimpse of the editing process behind the magazine pages of the 1950s.
