Here Tom Greenwade, the Yankees scout who signed Mickey Mantle out of Commerce, Oklahoma, in 1949, stands with Mantle and another Yankee as they talk with fans at a ballpark. The picture is one frame from a contact sheet by Jim Hansen, made for Look, a national magazine built around photo essays. Its May 1957 date falls in the years when Mantle was becoming one of the best-known players in the game. The relaxed, close-up moment between a scout and the player he discovered shows the informal side of big-league baseball away from the field.
