Mickey Mantle, the Yankees center fielder, appears here outdoors with his wife Merlyn and their four sons, Mickey Jr., Danny, David and Billy, in a family portrait taken for Look magazine. The print is a contact sheet frame, the small negative-size image a photographer would review before choosing shots for publication. Photographer Thomas R. Koeniges made the picture, and its 1968 date, added when it entered Look's library, places it in the final stretch of Mantle's career, a year before he retired after the 1968 season. Look's photo files preserve many images like this one, which show athletes away from the ballpark.
