Roger Peckinpaugh, the Washington Nationals shortstop, is caught at the plate in this action shot from a game against the Philadelphia Athletics. Sliding into home was a risky play in the 1920s, when catchers blocked the plate and umpires made quick, final calls on close plays. Peckinpaugh was one of the team's key infielders during the Senators' championship years, including their 1924 World Series win. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a large body of sports and news images made by a commercial studio that documented Washington's baseball teams in the early twentieth century.
