The Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan was the home of the New York Giants, and this view captures it during a 1913 World Series game, when the ballpark's crowds and its distinctive bowl of seating drew attention across the country. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures made by Bain's agency in New York in the 1910s, when newspapers were rapidly adopting photographs of sporting events. The 1913 Series pitted the Giants against the Philadelphia Athletics, and the Polo Grounds, with its tall grandstands and crowded stands, was one of the great stages of early twentieth-century baseball.
