This photograph shows players from the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies standing amid the ruins of the Polo Grounds after a fire on April 14, 1911. The blaze destroyed the park's wooden grandstands just as the season was getting underway, forcing the teams to find another place to play. The fire pushed the Giants' owners to rebuild the ballpark with steel and concrete, a change that made it one of the more durable stadiums of its era. The scene offers a rare look at the players themselves standing among the wreckage, not on the field.
