Taken at the Boston Ball Grounds in September 1912, this print documents a game in progress rather than a posed portrait of the grounds. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, one of the largest news photo archives of the early 20th century, built by a photographer who sold pictures of current events to newspapers. Baseball was then the dominant spectator sport in American cities, and ballpark photographs like this one show the crowds, field layout, and daily life of the game just before the period's rapid growth in stadium building.
